Studio portrait of Akershus lifestyle photographer Joyce Castro of Norway

Since I was a child, I was looking through photo albums, my favorite pictures to keep inside boxes, as a treasure so that I would have access only in the future. Two decades later, here I am: a journalist in love with photography. Whenever possible, I open my memory box to relive each step that has passed. My first dance at school, my 15th birthday party, my graduation, my wedding day, the birth of my daughter. These are moments when I can relive my dreams by looking at a photo, a simple image. I wanted to share this treasure with my daughter, so she had her own box of memories when she grew up. In the course of this process, I discovered that I did not want to share this heritage only with her, but with my family, friends, with you. Therefore, I searched for courses, workshops, books, inspirations that brought me here. And I still have a lot to photograph and learn.

Oslo family and lifestyle portrait photographer Nicola Paulukat of Norway

I have been photographing since I went to middle school. In university, I studied abroad (Singapore), traveled a lot, and had my camera with me everywhere. People always asked me why I photographed weird things, that nobody else seemed to “see” – like details on a wall. I also got really into editing and dove deep into Photoshop. Instead of studying, I remember sitting in the study room, editing images. However, it never crossed my mind to make it a business. After finishing my master’s in Information Management, I started as a consultant in a high profile international company. To make a long story short, I worked there for a couple of years and was miserable. It still didn’t cross my mind to make my love for photography business though. About three years ago, I talked to another mom at my kids’ kindergarten. She told me she was a birth photographer. At that moment something fell into place. This is what I wanted to do! I had always been fascinated by births, and to combine that with photography would be the best job in the whole wide world. I could literally not sleep the following night, that is how obsessed I was with the thought. I was lucky enough to actually be able to photograph my very first birth just a couple of months later. It was absolutely mindblowing, humbling, and amazing. However, I had a 6-months old, 3-year-old, and 6-year-old myself at that time, so I felt it was not possible for me in our family situation to become a birth photographer at that time. But this experience had triggered something in me. Maybe I could build something from my love for photography! It still took another year, until I photographed my first clients in October 2017. By then I knew exactly what I wanted to create: Lifestyle family photographs that are light and airy, and filled with unconditional love, and smiles, and connection. I had been spending more than 15 years with my camera and Photoshop; I do a lot of things intuitively, like finding the best light, and composition – now my focus lay on finding the real moments and connections. I read a citation by David Allen Harvey that says: “I don’t shoot what it looks like, I shoot what it feels like”. I made that my motto and my guideline, and what I always want to come back to when I am in danger of losing focus of why I do what I do. Since then I have photographed many, many families outdoors, in their own home, and last year started shooting video. Family films are so far unheard of in Norway, and I hope to create a market for it. Future goals! I want my clients to feel proud of their family when they look at my images. I want to open their eyes to what matters most in this world and in their lives. Life with small children can be overwhelming, and I want them to realize that it is the small moments that matter most! When my clients tell me that they had tears in their eyes when they saw their images. That moment, every time! What makes me most proud is the fact that I still, up to this day, get new clients that I can link back to the very first family that I photographed. That word of mouth has such an impact, and that these families come to me to be photographed, and not to someone else who might be closer or cheaper. I try to make my family sessions as stress-free and fun as possible for my clients. I provide them with a detailed guide with information about clothing choices, how to prepare the kids, and what to expect. In addition, I offer a client wardrobe with lots of choices for mum and kids to take the stress out of finding the perfect outfit. I absolutely adore children and the best feedback is usually a day or two after the session when mom tells me that the kids are still talking about me and want to meet me again. It just melts my heart every single day. One of the biggest compliments I ever got was “When I saw these photos I knew immediately whose photos they were- didn’t even have to see your name.”
